Why Doesn’t Sadness Go Away?

Why Doesn't Sadness Go Away?

Isn’t it amazing how a dream can fill your heart with joy? Maybe you’ve been dreaming about starting a ministry or launching a business, and just thinking about it fills you with a deep sense of purpose and satisfaction. Even when you run into challenges along the way, there’s still joy in your heart.

That’s because joy isn’t just a passing emotion or a response to something good happening. It’s a condition of the heart—something deeper that doesn’t depend on what’s going on around you.

You’ve probably experienced it: even when you’re facing disappointment or pain on the way to your dream, you can still feel joy deep inside. Tough situations come and go. Emotions rise and fall.

But the state of your heart is something you get to shape—especially when you choose to stay focused on God’s promises and the dream He placed in your heart. That dream can be a constant source of joy. So don’t lose sight of why you started your ministry or business in the first place.

So why does that joy sometimes fade? It happens when we dwell too much on the negative—when we keep thinking about our failures, disappointments, or how someone hurt us. Those thoughts start to take over, and before long, we stop hearing the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit and begin focusing only on what went wrong.

So how do we keep moving forward when life throws disappointments our way?

Every morning when you wake up, remind yourself: today is another chance to experience God’s mercy. You can’t change yesterday. So leave your past mistakes and regrets behind. Philippians 3:13 says we should forget what’s behind and press on toward what’s ahead.

Your future isn’t defined by what happened to you yesterday. It’s defined by where God is leading you today. That’s why it’s so important to stay focused on the dream He gave you. Trust the Holy Spirit and move forward with confidence.

Maybe someone took something from you—money, a business, or even a relationship. Maybe you feel betrayed or deeply hurt. That just means your faith is being tested. But don’t let those painful moments steal your dream or your joy. The Bible gives us a clear way forward. Ecclesiastes 11:10 says, “Remove sorrow from your heart.”

Why? Because it’s human nature to hold onto pain and replay the past. Our sinful nature wants to blame others and keep us stuck in a cycle of hurt.

But the Bible calls us to live by the Spirit. Galatians 5:22 says the fruit of the Spirit is joy, peace, love… Living this way means looking forward to what God has prepared for you. But it also takes effort. Jesus said in Matthew 11:12 that the Kingdom of God is taken by force—meaning it’s for those who are willing to fight for it.

So don’t let your emotions or your old nature dictate your mood or your direction. Choose to live by the Spirit. And when you do, you’ll see how sadness fades and joy begins to return. Remember, God turns everything around for good. He’s stronger than your pain. And He always keeps His promises.

There are generally two ways people react to hardship: with aggression or depression. But neither one reflects a strong character.

Aggression is anger turned outward. These people lash out, raise their voices, and criticize everyone around them. On the flip side, some withdraw into themselves. They don’t yell, but they fall into depression and feel hopeless. Depression is still anger—it’s just turned inward.

So if you notice signs of aggression or depression in your life, don’t make excuses for them. The Bible gives us a simple instruction: “Remove sorrow from your heart.” Let’s be honest—sad memories won’t help you win. Holding grudges won’t open the heavens. And self-pity won’t bring back God’s presence.

So forgive those who hurt you. Remember the dream God gave you. And wake up each day ready to live with joy—as if nothing bad had ever happened to you.
